There are various ways in which the twin coast cycle trail can traversed which includes accommodation at Mulga Bill’s Stopover. The most common ways are
Ride from Opua to Horeke/Mangungu
Arrange cycle hire or bring your own bikes; stay overnight at Opua or Paihia; leave vehicle at Opua; the first day – ride to Mulga Bill’s and stay overnight; the second day, after a sustaining breakfast – ride to Horeke/Mangungu; shuttle back to your vehicle at Opua that day, or stay overnight at the historic Horeke Hotel.
Ride from Horeke/Mangungu to Opua
Arrange cycle hire or bring your own bikes; stay overnight at the Horeke Hotel after visiting the Mangungu Mission (great museum); leave vehicle at Horeke; the first day – ride to Mulga Bill’s and stay overnight; the second day, after a sustaining breakfast – ride to Opua; shuttle back to Horeke that day.
For both cases above, the shuttle could take place at the beginning of day 1; in which case the trail is traversed in the opposite direction, and you ride back to your vehicle.
There are various combinations of how the trail can be tackled. Sometimes vehicles are left at Mulga Bill’s and a designated driver shuttles the cyclists to and from the start and destination points. This may involve 2 or 3 nights stay at Mulga Bill’s.
